24 MyClubs Classes in 25 Days
As you may have read in my MyClubs Review post, I tried out my first month of MyClubs and went pretty wild. To be honest, this post was supposed to be 25 MyClubs Classes in 25 Days, but too often classes were cancelled on me last minute, or I would have to work for unexpectedly, etc. These things happen.
One thing I noticed were a lot of classes were not as full as I had expected them to be, which leads me to assume that the Viennese have found some other secret ways to burn off all the bread and desserts they eat. At home in major U.S cities, you would normally have to book a fitness class a couple days in advance, or at least show up ten minutes early to the class to get in and secure a nice little corner for you and your mat. I was just surprised to see that the classes as well as the gyms were often very empty.
I was also a little taken a back to see that often nobody cleaned off the mats after they used them (ick) and at a lot of studios you even had to pay to rent the mats. This is probably normal here, but not at the gyms I’ve been to back home. I was also surprised how the instructors rarely introduced themselves and were not always very peppy and friendly (Again, it’s Austria…), so my apologies for not being able to provide you with all the instructors’ names. Most of the names I did find I had to look up afterwards on the studio’s website.
Before I had found MyClubs, I was a bit scared to start a new workout class without knowing what it would be like, how the instructor would be, and whether or not it would be entirely in German and I would look like an idiot for not understanding. That is why I wrote up this post– to give you a personal peek into each class that I did. Feel free to skip to the bottom to find out my favorites.
Here is where you can find reviews of all the classes (and open court/gyms) my friend and I did. I tried to do a variety, but had to work around my schedule and the classes that were available at the times I needed them. I’ve also thrown in some of the fails we encountered like not being able to find the studio, or classes getting cancelled on us, just to give you a heads up.
Note* If you would like to try out MyClubs, using my referral code: UCD644F, will get you 20€ off your first purchase! So why not give it a try?
1) Zumba
-
Tuesday September 26th 9:00-10:00
- Tumbao, Margaretenstrasse 26 1040 Wien
- Instructor: Joel
- At first, my friend and I didn’t know what to expect as we got there 15 minutes early and it was not open yet. As it was cold, we went to Billa to gaze at some bread rolls to pass the time and came back at 9:00. We were let in and there was only one other woman there waiting for the class. Naturally, I feared it would be awkward and the instructor would be able to solely focus on my lack of rhythm and lost puppy dog expression. Once we went downstairs to the room, the instructor arrived. He spoke very little German and did most of the songs with a little bit of Spanish/Portugese/Italian commentary (Saying “bonjourno,” but then lots of “Muy bien chiquititas,” throughout the class which I enjoyed). The playlist was pumpin’, a mix of Spanish Reggaeton and pop. While the class ended up being pretty intimate, with just five of us (including the front desk lady who came to get down and break a sweat), we found it to be a lot of fun and with a very short addition of planks in there (that was unexpected) it definitely felt like a good workout.

- Bring a towel, you will work up a sweat.
- Wear proper shoes. My Underarmour trainers were much too slippery on the dance floor.

2) Fitness Boxing
- Wednesday September 27th 9:00-10:00
- Backyard Wien, Burggasse 95 1070 Wien
- Instructor: Konstantin
- This is a great place to go if you want to discover how incredibly out of shape you are. It started with some very intense cardio including jumping rope, push-ups, sit-ups and squats. At first I did not think I would be able to last that whole hour but then the punches begin. It was a lot to keep in mind (knees bent, chin down, arms up, shoulders forward, standing not in a straight line, hopping on the balls of your feet, etc.) all while trying not to get too distracted by how attractive the instructor is. At the end, we were shaking profusely while reaching for protein bars in Billa. Your body will hate you, your mind will pat you on the back, your heart will want to return to see Konstantin.

- Advice:
- Bring a towel.
- Try not to die.
- Stretch afterwards. You will surely be sore.

3) Body Wellness
- Thursday September 28th 10:30-11:25
- WorkOut Gesundheit, Fitness, Wellness, Rötzergasse 41, Wien 1170
- Instructor: Stephanie
- This was just what we needed after a day of boxing. It was a relaxing class, mostly some simple stretches, nothing too strenuous. There were about 10 others in the class, some older. The instructor spoke only in German, but I got the jist from context clues and sneakily eyeing everyone else in the room to see what they were doing. It ended with several minutes of meditatively lying in corpse pose, and then having some essential oil dabbed on your wrist which is always nice. Everyone at this gym was very friendly too.

- Advice: Just come here and chillax.

*Friday, September 29:
- Re:Vive at RE:TREAT Vienna– We couldn’t actually find where the studio was, as it was locked and there was no labeled buzzer for the building. We also saw online that you have to pay for mats so we weren’t too bothered about it.
4) Piloxing Knockout
- Saturday September 30th 10:15-10:45
- GK Studio, Alserbachstraße 11 1090 Wien
- Instructor: Azra
- We liked this class because it was only a half hour, but it was very intense and high-cardio. There were five people in the class, including my friend and I. We were both sick with a cold during it so we definitely felt like we were gonna die, but the instructor was so upbeat and motivating so it wasn’t too bad.
- Language: Mix of German and English
- Advice:
- Try not to do this when you’re feeling sick.

5) Ashtanga Yoga
- Sunday October 1st 11:00-12:30
- In Good Shape, Obere Donaustraße 69, 1020 Wien
- Instructor: Stephanie (I think?)
- This class was an enjoyable yoga practice. There was no music, which was a little off-putting because I don’t like silence, when you can hear everyone’s bones cracking and stomach gurgling. Both on MyClubs and on the gym’s website, it said the class was 60 minutes but when we got there we were informed that it was 90 minutes, which was at least nice to know before it started. Because we both have no attention spans and we had been looking for a shorter class, we were a little off-put by this, but it ended up being totally fine as the practice was very relaxing and definitely not too much to handle. We did some sun salutations, standing positions which we held for five seconds each (yoga seconds… which is really like 10 real seconds), and then we did sitting positions. There were five of us in the class and the instructor kindly did the class in English, which we didn’t ask her to but we really appreciated. She said it was her first time instructing yoga in English but she did very well. You don’t have to rent mats here as you do in some other yoga studios. Mats are provided as well as blankets and a surprise free smoothie at the end!

- Advice: Put your belongings in the lockers in the hallway. Somebody stole my sweatshirt from the dressing room 🙁

*Monday, October 2nd:
- Pilates at YogaKula- Showed up for this one and saw on the schedule hanging on the door that the class was not on at that time. Apparently they hadn’t told MyClubs because we didn’t get any sort of notification.
6)Tuesday, Pilates
- Tuesday October 3rd 9:00-9:55
- WorkOut Gesundheit, Fitness, Wellness; Rötzergasse 41, 1170 Wien
- I used to take a pilates class twice a week for a semester in college and it would always leave me feeling like I had a good workout. At first, I thought this class was a bit too lax, but towards the end there were definitely some good ab workouts in there. Although if you go to this class fearing that German ladies will yell at you in German to adjust your form and you’ll have no idea what they’re saying, you’d be right.

*Wednesday October 4th, 2 classes canceled:
- The night beforehand we registered for Core & Back at GK Studio and Barre at In Good Shape. Both were cancelled. Core & Back we registered for and didn’t find out until the morning that it was cancelled.
7) Zumba
- Thursday October 5th 9:00-10:00
- Tumbao, Margaretenstrasse 26, 1040
- Instructor: Jefferson
- We had already done Zumba at this place but this time it was with a different instructor. This guy could twerk! Be prepared to be super jealous of how some random German-speaking dude can dance way better than you. He was super nice and upbeat and the class entailed a lot of good cardio with no plank work this time. Overall it was a great class.
- Language: German
- Advice: Get your groove on.

- Enjoyment: 5
- Intensity: 3
8) Stretching
- Thursday, October 5th 10:30-11:30
- Fitnessclub Heimlich, Ungarnasse 4, 1030
- This class, as I expected, was a lot of older people. The instructor was a bit off, not terribly enthusiastic and rather quiet. I also didn’t feel the stretching was particularly good. I was expecting to come out of the class feeling super stretched out and as flexible as a spaghetti noodle, but that didn’t happen. The stretching involved was just very basic and light and not challenging, (even for me who can barely touch my toes). There were no hip stretches at all. I don’t think I would go to this class again.

9) Jumping
- Friday October 6th, 10:30-11:30
- Bodydays; Jedlersdorferstrasse 94, 1210
- Instructor: Tanja
- Jumping was so much fun. Each person gets their own mini trampolines (which they provide). You do wear shoes for this, and bring a towel because it gets sweaty. There is no need to put your bags in the locker room because you can bring them inside. The lady at the front desk was super rude, which sucks but I’ve come to expect it in Austria. You’ll find the class in the gymnastic saal and the instructor there on the other hand, was super friendly, nice, and motivating. She did the class partly in German, partly in English for my friend and I. It was a great work out! It had good cardio, definitely works the glutes and quads, and at the end there was some ab work. This was probably my favorite class so far and I would totally recommend it.
- Language: English and German
- Advice:
- Be aware that the place is massive so leave time to find the actual room.
- Bring proper shoes and a towel.
- Get there early to set up your trampoline because the class starts immediately.
- Facilities: 4
- Instructor: 5
- Enjoyment: 5
- Intensity: 4
10) Chromatic Yoga
- Friday, October 6th 13:30-14:30
- Lenok Yoga, Stubenring 14/DG, 1010 Wien
- Instructor: Lenok
- This class was in a cute studio, a small room which made for a cozy class. It was definitely a workout as there was a constant flow with not much break. Bring a towel inside as it was a little hot and we were slipping all over the mats. You also have to rent a mat, which is annoying as it didn’t say that on the website. The instructor was really nice and peppy, something we haven’t found much from Austrian workout classes, and the class was led in English. It ended very nicely with a brief neck massage with essential oil.
- Language: English
- Advice:
- Bring a towel.
- Bring your own mat if you have one.
- Facilities: 3 (Nice yoga room but there were no lockers and you have to rent a mat)
- Instructor: 4
- Enjoyment: 3
- Intensity: 3-4 (Not as intense as some high cardio classes, but for a yoga class it definitely works you out)
11) Barre (Women Only)
- Saturday October 7th 11:00-12:00
- Pilates Boutique Vienna; Elisabethstraße 6/3/17, 5 1010 Wien
- It was a bit confusing to get in, so just to warn you, you buzz the boutique from the outside of the whole building to get in and then you buzz another door. Then, you take an elevator to floor 5 and then it’s on your right when you exit the elevator. The studio is set up like an apartment, there’s a kitchen when you walk in, a toilet, etc. However, there was no wardrobe and the barre room was a bit small for how many people were in it. It is nice though with huge windows and they provide everything (weights, mats, balls) for you. The only thing I didn’t like was it had a (for lack of a better word) bitchy vibe to it. I’ve noticed most of the workout classes we’ve been to people seemed really friendly, but here it kind of seemed like the people in the class lived around here and came here all the time, and we were invading their territory. The class was entirely in German. The class itself was a great entire body workout. We started with some exercises that work your calves, glutes, and quads, and gradually moved to arms, shoulders, back, abs, etc. It’s constantly moving so it’s pretty intense.
- Language: German
- Advice:
- Leave a couple extra minutes early to find the room.
- Facilities: 4
- Instructor: 4
- Enjoyment: 3
- Intensity: 4
*Sunday, October 8th
- Kickbox & Tabata was cancelled at GK Studio on my friend’s app but not on mine. She got a notice the day of.
12) OPEN GYM
- Sunday, October 8th
- Fitness Club Heimlich, Ungargasse 4, 1030 Wien
- We used our tageskarte (day pass) at Fitnessclub Heimlich. This gym is DECKED out. They have every machine you can imagine, plus weights, medicine balls, TRX bands, a small climbing wall, etc. Oh, and there were only about two other people in the gym, so no wait for any machines and no feeling judged during your workout. The dressing rooms are very nice as well. There are also free lockers and a sauna! It’s definitely worth checking this gym out.

13) Aerial Yoga
- Tuesday October 10th 10:00-11:30
- Aerial Yoga, Tendlergasse 11 1090
- This class was a blast! I think it was my favorite instructor out of any of the classes so far. (Unfortunately I don’t know her name and she’s not listed on the site). She was really nice and helpful and didn’t make me feel judged. Yoga can often be embarrassing when you don’t know what you’re doing and this was both my and my friend’s first time doing aerial yoga. The instructor fortunately didn’t put too much pressure on us, while still checking in on us enough to make sure we were comfortable. She also spoke English with us but asked if I minded if she did the class in German. I said no that’s fine, (because I didn’t want to be the stupid American who makes her teach a class in two languages), but looking back on it, I think I should have asked her to repeat some things at the beginning of the class in English. At the beginning, everyone is wrapped up in their little aerial cocoon so while she’s talking I couldn’t actually see what was happening so I didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing. My friend and I kept poking our heads out of our little burritos to see what was going on. However that was really all on us, and once the warm-up was done it was much easier to see her and follow along. The class was good for stretching your muscles and was as much work as you want it to be. The brief hanging-upside-down part was the hardest, but other than that the class was pretty relaxing. I would definitely go to this again and would recommend it for anyone else!
- Language: German
- Advice:
- Make sure there’s enough space between you and the person beside you.
- If you’re not a German speaker, ask if the instructor can do the beginning part in English.
- Facilities: 4 (because the lady next to me was WAY too close and kept bumping into me and getting in my bubble, but that’s mostly on her for not using the further aerial band)
- Instructor: 5 (like I said, perfect!)
- Enjoyment: 5
- Intensity: 3
14) Modern Jazz Dance
- Wednesday, October 11 20:00-21:30
- In Good Shape (but through Yamas.org); Obere Donaustraße 69 1020 Wien
- Instructor: Marie-Therese
- This class was so much fun! Honestly there’s not much I love more than choreographed jazz dance (that sounded sarcastic, but it’s not). The instructor was excellent. She introduced herself; she was funny and helpful and did the class both in English and German. The class was pretty small, about seven girls total and one man. It started with about a half hour work-out of ab crunches, hip exercises, push-ups, etc. so you definitely feel like you’re getting a good workout before the really fun stuff begins. You end up learning some really cool choreography, which is hard to memorize entirely in such a short period, so it definitely made me want to come back. Apparently this class isn’t through the studio In Good Shape, that was just the location. It was through Yamas.org, and you find more about the Marie-Therese and her jazz dancing here.
- Language: English and German
- Advice:
- Inform her ahead of time if you don’t speak German.
- Be prepared to bust a move.

15) Sound Cycling Sunrise
- Thursday, October 12 7:15-8:10
- Urban Indoor Cycling Studio; Bauernmarkt 18/10 1010 Wien
- Instructor: Stefan
- We were really scared for this class because it’s spin… at 7:15 a.m. but it was actually one of my favorites so far. As it was a new time slot for the class, it was just my friend and I in the class. The room was dark and there was a black light so it was like COSMIC cycling. Who doesn’t love a good black light in their workout class? The instructor was perfect. He kept saying things like “Whatever you want to be possible today, you decide. You push yourself as hard as you want.” He was very encouraging but didn’t put too much pressure on us. The class had a lot of intervals and different sections so it didn’t get boring. It was a good workout, definitely recommend!
- Language: English
- Advice:
- Bring a towel.
- Don’t eat right beforehand.
- Bring headphones!

16) Open Gym Tageskarte
- Thursday, October 12
- ISC Studio, Mariahilferstrasse 47 1060 Wien
- This was a great facility, well-equipped with a nice locker room, bathroom, and some extra goodies for purchase like bananas and protein bars. It was very quiet and pretty empty. The whole place was three floors (it was a workout just walking up the spiral staircases) and it’s very clean and peaceful.
- Facilities: 5
- Ambience: 5
*Friday, October 13
- Yoga Basiskurs- Perform Zentrum
- We could not find this place, looked around the address, didn’t see a door to it or any signs.
17) Open Gym Tageskarte
- Friday, October 13
- Fitness Club 39, Porzellangasse 39-41, 1090 Wien
- To be honest, this place would not be first choice when picking a gym. It’s old and small. The workout area is one room with dated wooden walls that make you feel like you’re in a log cabin. Because it’s one small solitary room and there’s no music playing (only a very quiet radio that was mostly talking), the whole atmosphere just felt very awkward. If you were to have a conversation with your workout buddy, everybody would be eavesdropping. If you breathe, everybody hears it. The lockers are small so you can’t fit a backpack in there, literally just your wallet and phone and keys. The changing rooms are open so anyone can walk in, and there’s not even a door between the men’s and women’s. When we had to leave, we had to wait for ages for the woman to return from the deep depths of the staff room so we could return our locker key and get our ID back. Also what gym doesn’t open until 10 A.M? Unfortunately, I wouldn’t really recommend anyone to go here.
- Facilities: 2
- Ambience: 2
*Saturday October 14
- LV1: Upper Body at GYMCLUB
- Class was canceled on my friend’s app but not for mine.
18) Open Tennis
- Sunday, October 15th
- Sportzentrum Marswiese, Neuwaldegger Str. 57A, 1170
- We went here to play tennis and it was a beautiful day. You have to call to rent out the court for an hour but the lady on the phone was surprisingly nice and spoke English. It’s too bad this place is so far away, out in the burbs closer to Lower Austria, because it was beautiful. Amidst mountains of fall foliage, there’s a huge sports center with soccer fields, tennis courts, and a restaurant. There are three tennis courts available and you can rent rackets for 2 euro each. We borrowed balls from the many laying around the court next to us, not sure if that’s allowed. Lovely place!

19) Aerial Yoga Relax
- Sunday October 15 18:00-19:30
- Aerial Yoga, Tendlergasse 11 1090 Wien
- This class was so nice and relaxing. It is definitely good on a Sunday night to prepare you for the week. The teacher was very nice and did the class mostly in English. They lower the bands so the inversions (upside-down parts) are not as scary as the regular class. The class involves a lot of hip-opening, various stretches, and meditation. It’s not very strenuous. The studio is very nice too, as they have free tea and flavored water. This class is one of my favorites and I definitely would go to it again.
- Language: English
- Advice: Go here to relax and prepare for a good week.

20) Core & Back
- Tuesday October 17 7:15-8:00
- In Good Shape, Obere Donaustrasse 69, 1020
- Instructor: Meli
- I was pretty scared for this class but it actually wasn’t too bad. It definitely works your core and back with poses like plank, squats, etc. but you don’t hold each position for too long so it was pretty enjoyable. The teacher was very nice as she did the class in a mix of both German and English. Good work out, good start to the day.

21) Hot Yoga
- Thursday October 19th 10:00-11:00
- Hot Yoga Vienna, Gumpendorfer Strasse 63C/1, 1060 Wien
- Instructor: Sybille
- This was my first time doing hot yoga, and to be honest I don’t plan on doing it again. I just hate being sweaty. And I hate seeing other people sweaty. And I hate smelling it. It’s just all around gross and I am not a fan. However, although I have no other hot yoga experience to compare it to, I’d say this is a nice class. It’s grossly hot but it’s not too strenuous, just a lot of stretches to warm up your muscles. The class had about eight people total and the instructor, who was one of the friendliest Austrians I’ve met so far, wandered around the room instructing rather than doing all the poses with you at the front. The class was done entirely in German but it wasn’t too hard to figure out.
- Language: German
- Advice:
- Wear dark clothes to the class so your sweat marks aren’t as prominent.
- Bring a mat if you have one as they do charge to rent.
- Bring a change of clothes.

22) P.I.I.T & Sixpack
- Thursday, October 19th 12:00-12:45
- GK Studio, Alserbachstraße 11/3, 1090 Wien
- Instructor: Meli
- This was actually the same instructor as we had for Core & Back. She’s super fun and motivating and does the class partly in English which is helpful. She knows how to get you pumped and actually enjoy working out. The class is only 45 minutes long which is good. It includes 30 seconds of intense exercise, 15 seconds off, and you do each interval twice. The last ten minutes of class are ab exercises on the mat. It definitely left me feeling like a pile of Jell-o.

23) Get In Shape
- Friday, October 20th 8:30-9:30
- Zumba im Loft25, Theresiengasse 47, 1180
- Instructor: Marie-Christin
- I thought this was a great class as it worked the whole body. There were about 12 of us total in the class and it was in a very large room with a mirror (which I like because you can watch your form). There’s a lot of cardio work and you use dumbbells, ankle weights, and even a muscle roller at the end. The class entails some standing work and then some floor work mostly consisting of hip and ab exercises. The teacher was very friendly and did the class mostly in German but spoke in English when she spoke to us.

24) Step- Medium
- Friday October 20th, 11:00-12:00
- Floor A Fitness, Bergmillergasse 5, 1140 Wien
- Instructor: Fernando
- This class was taught by Fernando, who was a very friendly and upbeat instructor. However, I would definitely recommend doing the Step Basic course before this one. The class entailed a lot of intricate step work similar to salsa dancing which I was not expecting. I LOVE dancing so it was great fun but it did often make me feel like I had no rhythm, as a lot of the badass ladies in the class seemed to have the routine memorized and had no trouble following along with him. I would love to do the basic class a few times to prepare and then come back to this one because it was a lot of fun. However, for newcomers like my friend and I, it required a lot of mental effort. It’s a lot of cardio, but not too strenuous physically.

In conclusion, those are all the classes my friend and I tried. My favorites so far would definitely be jumping, sound cycle, aerial yoga, and modern jazz, but there were a lot of other great ones. If we sign up for MyClubs again, we’re hoping to try a lot more. (Shout-out to Georgia for enduring those 25 days with me). Hopefully this gave you a better idea of what to expect from MyClubs and the specific classes and motivate you to get your booty movin’!
