Anyone else been struggling with Vienna’s weak gym game? 🙋🏻
It seems like all the gyms here are for the fancy rich people and there aren’t very many for those who scrape by on a measly au pair salary like my friends and I. (The help likes to work out too, ya know?) I miss being able to use the fabulous student gym at my University at home and all the fitness classes that went along with it. Here in Vienna, however, it’s been a struggle to find somewhere suitable. Therefore, I would like to help anyone else out in such a situation, and give you my full review of MyClubs.
MyClubs Review
If you don’t know what MyClubs is, it’s very similar to ClassPass in the U.S, in which you pay monthly for a membership and can do a variety of fitness classes at different studios taught by different instructors around the city. This past month a friend and I tried out MyClubs for the first time as they were having a September special. The special was 39.99/month for unlimited classes, (it’s normally 79€). September is over BUT by using my discount code: UCD644F, you can still get 20€ off your first purchase, huzzah!
Pros:
MyClubs is available in Austria and Switzerland and has loads of classes from boxing to cycling to jazz dance. They have a wide range of classes from really tough high-intensity workouts to meditation and stretching. You can check out a full review of the 24 classes I did here. I didn’t realize this until half way through the month, but they also have facilities with open hours that you can go to. You can rent out a tennis court for an hour with your MyClubs membership, or time at a bouldering place, or even just get a day pass to a gym if you feel like working out on your own.
The variety of options on MyClubs is amazing. The app is also very easy to use. You can click on a day and see all the available classes, or click onto the “flexible hours” tab to see the open court and gym availability. You can also search for certain classes and keep “favorites” for later. Their customer service is top-notch as well.
Cons:
The only downside to MyClubs was a couple of times our classes got cancelled or not-confirmed on us, often the morning of, when it was too late to register for any other appealing classes. There was one class we had signed up for on MyClubs and went all the way to the studio for. Only then did we see the schedule hanging on the door displaying that the class was not in fact on that day. So perhaps the communication between the studios and MyClubs could be improved.
Advice:
Get a workout buddy to sign up with you, it makes it more fun! Preferably one who will agree to do 24 MyClubs classes in 25 days with you, even some as early as 7:15 ;).
Sign up for classes as early as possible so you can get confirmed as early as possible!
MyClubs has payment options for either 39€ a month for four sport units or 79€ a month for unlimited sport units (which is not technically unlimited, it’s 35 units/month) during which you can only go to the same “sports partner,” or place, four times throughout that month. One can also pay 129€ for ten classes, which one has 24 months to use.
To Conclude:
Overall, I would recommend MyClubs as a great way to stay fit in Vienna and burn off all the calories you consume from sachertorte, palatschinken, and other delicious Austrian delicacies. I like it because there were so many things I had been wanting to try (like aerial yoga and boxing) but couldn’t find classes within my budget or time-frame suitable for beginners. The variety of classes and locations is great, as is the user-friendly interface. It’s great for people who like to try new things but may not want to make the commitment of signing up for a whole month at one studio that they have never tried before. It’s for people who are open to different forms of exercise and want to be able to schedule their fitness at the click of a button.
Fun Fact: If you use my referral code (UCD644F) you can get a discount of 20€ off your first purchase.
